PHL: Cases to be filed against Hospitals, FDA, DOH Officials for continuous use of Remdesivir

April 26, 2021 (Philippines) | It is no secret that many are expressing their displeasure against the choice actions the Philippines Department of Health (DOH) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have been implementing.

In the recent news, through the legal counsel of Atty. Larry Gadon, two lawmakers are moving forward to file cases against the officials of FDA & DOH. These government organizations are continuously allowing the prescription and use of Remdesivir, despite the WHO’s memo.

The decision came after Deputy Speaker and SAGIP Partylist Rep. Rodante Marcoleta and AnaKalusugan Rep. Mike Defensor had a meeting regarding the patients’ complaints that the price rates of Remdesivir spike up upon billing than the original price.

Atty. Larry Gadon stated:

“We will help the victims of the wrong policies and guidelines of the DOH and FDAs on insisting the use of Remdesivir despite the declaration of the World Health Organization that it is ineffective and must be discontinued. Covid victims are charged bloated amounts of charges for Remdesivir while the drug does not even help.”

Rep. Marcoleta scrutinized the unjust ways of manipulating and putting the people in a difficult situation despite the current health crisis in the country, sharing his views in the Kamara meeting.

Rep. Mike Defensor did not hide his disapproval of the scheme done by FDA and DOH officials at the expense of the patients.

“Ang ipinagtataka ko bakit ipinagpatuloy ito sa dito sa ating bansa gayung noon pang nakaraang taon ay sinabi na ng WHO (World Health Organization) na hindi na ito (Remdesivir) pwede. Isa ito sa mga bagay na dapat linawin. Parang may eskima, pinayagan siya tapos ang presyo napakalaki. Parang sinadya sa gitna ng pandemya ay may nakikinabang.”

(It’s honestly puzzling why they are still proceeding using the medicine here in our country, when last year, the World Health Organization stated that it should no longer be prescribed. It’s among the issues that need to be clarified. It’s like there’s a scheme that they were allowed to maximize the prices. It’s as if someone is intentionally doing it to acquire profit amid the pandemic.)

Cong. Defensor provided several pieces of evidence about the overpricing of the drug Remdesivir with original prices of a thousand pesos then ballooning up to ten-thousand to thirty-two thousand per dose. What’s more, Rep. Mike Defensor encourages anyone who wants to file a complaint and send it to his official Facebook page.

Atty. Larry Gadon added that he believes that all this foolishness needs to end.

“We will file cases against those who took advantage of the covid victims and this could involve DOH FDA officials and hospitals.”
