Four Benefits of a Community Garden

1. You can eat healthy and organic foods

If you desire a diet that is truly nutritious and organic, you must try planting your own food. And if you want to do it a bit easier, you must create a community garden or at least join one (if your place already has a garden). To start a community garden, you should have a group of friends that are committed and eager to keep the project going. You can start with three people then invite more in your neighbourhood and make it grow. If you want to know more about how to start a community garden, you should check out some nice community gardening tips from the internet. Many of these include the topic of how to start one in your community. One of best reasons to do this is that community gardens (organic) provide nutritious foods that are free from pesticides.

2. You can plant your own medicine

Another benefits we can have from having or joining a community garden is that we can learn about natural medicines or herbal plants through growing and taking care of them. We can also make our own remedies for simple illnesses or health problems for as long as we are interested to study them. You can plant any herbs and medicinal flowers you want such as basil, peppermint, thyme, blue ternate, ginger, garlic, etc. It is not only inspiring to learn and practice growing your own medicine but also absolutely empowering. So if you want this kind of experience, try joining or starting a community garden.

3. You can start to practice being self-reliant

The security on food is a major issue in many countries around the world today. This is because food is one of our essential basic needs. However, the number of farmers has been declining, making it more favorable to multinational corporations to monopolize the market. This is one of the main reasons why it is very hard to avoid foods that have been produced with pesticides and other harmful synthetic fertilizers right now because giant corporations such as Monsanto are excessively experimenting on our food; creating strong and deadly chemicals such as Roundup, making it available worldwide for farmers to use and even get sick. And lastly, this is also the reason why most of us have been so dependent on them. So if you want to start walking the path to independence and self-reliance on the issue of food, try joining a community gardening project in your area.

4. You can socialize with your neighbours and co-gardeners

In today’s society, people have been so alienated against each other in a very great sense. Everywhere you look, it seems that most people are not really interested on talking to one another personally and just look at their cell phones or tablets all the time, from children to adult. Many of people’s interaction today are often limited to social media and other similar platforms and this has been getting prevalent all over the world. However, in a community garden, things are way so different. Through gardening activities (tilling, cultivating, weeding, watering, etc.), people can focus on real things, moving and growing, including on one another, that’s why they will have a big chance of getting along and having good conversation that could possibly lead into more ideas and projects!
