How to Avoid Miscommunication in Social Media

In today’s world, technology plays a big role in our daily interactions with people. Except for those who are living in not so developed areas, this is undeniably true. That is why communication skills in different forms are very important and should be encouraged by many institutions so that people will learn to use them to maintain a good relationship with their families or workmates. Since many of our communications these days are done through social media or text messages, it is also very important for people to be aware of the disadvantages of these channels and make extra effort to properly deliver and understand or interpret the messages they send or receive.

There are people who uses straightforward messages and there are also who uses indirect words or sentences. This will be more challenging for you and make you read between the lines. However, these are the ones that often cause miscommunication. But implicit or explicit, it is the responsibility of both the sender and the receiver to make the communication clear and effective. As a sender, you should phrase your messages in an explicit way to avoid misunderstanding and as a person receiving the message, you must analyze it clearly and ask questions if necessary to prevent messing it up or even ruining your relationship with the person.

Since most people use social media or text messages as a tool for communication, these channels must be fully understood and properly used by many as they are sometimes the reason why organizations or families break down. Although the advantage of this is that, written communications are stored and can be accessed easily when needed. This will be so helpful for people not to keep on repeating what they are saying. And for your messages to be clearer on social media, try not to use implicit words and sentences when communicating. You can also use emoji as it helps gives a little impression on your body language and facial expressions, therefore, preventing the receiver from forming assumptions.

Another thing you also do is ask the receiver a question if he or she really understood what you are trying to say. And, if you are the receiver, try to read fully what the other person is saying and do not jump in to make your own point without processing and understanding it properly. And if you are in an argument, try to control your emotion and ego so that you can prevent the dialogue from going array or leading into a confusing direction. This will help you through in making the conversation efficient and productive, thus, enabling you to agree with each other and come up with positive results . Lastly, keep in mind also that even though the sender is not really skilled in communicating, you as a receiver can still avoid messing it up by using your best sharp analyzing ability. You can also ask the other person to elaborate or re-phrase the message in a more explicit and understandable ways so that everything will be properly addressed.
